EXERCISE MORE EFFECTIVE – WHEN YOU BELIEVE

Exercise is not your thing, a waste of time and overall just a big hassle? Then you might as well not do it. According to a recent study, the more you believe in the positive effects of exercising, the greater they will be. Vice versa, those who don't believe get less benefits.

EXERCISE MORE EFFECTIVE – WHEN YOU BELIEVE

Psychologist Hendrik Mothes from the University of Freiburg’s Department of Sport Science addresses in his latest study the question whether our mindset going into exercise plays a role in the psychological and neurophysiological benefits from exercise. In other words: If you tell yourself you are going to feel great and relaxed after a workout, will this have a placebo effect that causes you to actually feel better?

He also looked at the question whether we can influence our attitude towards exercise with short films that praise the positive effects of sports or do the opposite.

The participants were put into different groups and asked about their mindset towards exercise. Before and after exercising questionnaires were filled out to record their mood and well-being. Additionally, they were shown short films that either praise the positive effects of cycling or not. Moreover, the researchers measured the participants’ brain activity with an electroencephalogram (EEG).

“The results demonstrate that our belief in how much we will benefit from physical activity has a considerable effect on our well-being in the manner of a self-fulfilling prophecy,” explains Mothes.

Believing that physical activity will influence you positively causes a placebo effect which makes you enjoy the exercise more whilst improving your mood and reducing anxiety more than if you were to not believe in its positive effects.

Even on a neuronal level these differences can be seen: According to the measurements of brain activity, the participants with greater expectations were more relaxed.

So if you want to get the most out of your workout, make sure to have the right mindset before you get started. Listen to motivating music, watch a few fitness motivation videos and believe that afterwards you will feel like a new person!

Here's a great video that will do just that:
